Two good things happened today

I am now Jonathan H. Roth, ARM, AU.

Yey. I passed ARM - 56 Risk Financing today. It was actually pretty interesting material. Luckily I knew a bit about alternative risk retention and transfer plans going into it or else I would have been dead in the water. It will be nice to go into my 3rd stage interviews with a brand new resume with the extra letters behind the name.

Speaking of interviews, the head of loss control for the Mid-West became the managing underwriter for that territory today. I think this is very good news for me. When I interviewed for him I didn't think he'd have a whole lot of input on the process because he was loss control and I was interviewing for an underwriting position. How things change.

Our interview was pretty interesting. He wasn't really prepared so he just started at the bottom of the resume. He asked me a few questions to get his bearings straight. Then he looked to the top of the resume.

"Wait. You work for Selective now?"

"Yeah. I work in branchville in SRM. I've been with the company a little over a year now."

"Why are we even interviewing you? Why don't we just hire you?"

"[I laugh] I don't know, but I like the way you think."

From that point on we talked about football, soccer and rugby. I was in his office for 20 minutes of a budgeted 90. Now he's presumably a major player in the hiring decision and it's pretty clear where he stands.

Keeping our fingers crossed for you Jon. It'd be awesome to have you back in Ohio! (And Columbus would be a really cool place for your sisters to visit!)
