I got a call from BB/BS last thursday. They found the person they want to match with me. I haven't met him yet but he sounds... intense.
Here's a brief Bio:
Logan i's 9. Dad physically abused mom and is now in prison. Subsequent boyfriend had more kids with his mom (1 step brother, 3 step sisters). He made all the kids watch as he beat his mother. Then something happened and the boyfriend kidnapped him and his sibilings for three months. Logan is bi-polar with ADHD. His favorite movie is xXx and his favorite artist is Eminem. I'm supposed to meet him soon so this week or weekend I think.
So what do 9 year olds like to do? Are they too old for play parks and stuff like that?

Yowza! If nothing else, you know you'll be one of the most positive influences he'll have in his life right now. What an opportunity for you to have an impact in the life of someone else!
It's so sad what he's dealt with in his life so far...and it's really awesome that you are doing this...
You.Rock.Jon. (I had to try the emphasis you like to put in your writings.) :)
Well of course I have no idea what 9 year olds like to do. How about look at what Caryn likes to do? I would keep in mind that he is probably an "old" 9 - meaning he is wise for his years, even if academically and socially he does not show those traits. I agree with Angie, it is very commendable that you would be a potential confidant and positive influence on him. Don't talk to him about politics or economics though! =)
Ask him. Most kids will let you know immediately what they are interested in. He sounds like many of my students. Just keep in mind that he doesn't need pity. Many times if kids feels that you pity them, they'll quickly take advantage and play on your emotions. I know...I'm grizzled. I'd say the most important thing in his life is to have a positive male role model. You might be the only one he ever has! No pressure, though! :)
